Fire Safety Signage

Fire safety signage is a much more diverse and broad part of of the regulations then most people realise, and we include a lot of the people who work in this industry in that statement.

Signs are required in multiple areas and come in a range of different types and uses:

Evacuation: Fire exit and directional fire exit signs must be symbolic using the "running man" symbol and not just text, they have to be either Photo-luminescent (glow in the dark) or be accompanied with the correct emergency lighting and use the regulations outlined in BS5266 to ascertain the correct locations and type.

Fire Action: Fire action signs are there to give everyone clear instruction and information regarding, Fire Alarm & evacuation procedures, assembly points, disabled persons, how to raise the alarm etc. They should be positioned at all entrances to buildings and other key and strategic places throughout the building.

Instruction Signs: In an emergency even regular users of a building can sometimes forget or panic when performing a basic task to evacuate or make an area safe, also there's always a possibility that personnel not familiar with the building are on site, so signs giving clear instructions are required, such like Break Glass for Key,  Push, Pull or Turn to open signs, also Fire Door do not obstruct, or keep exit clear, do not shut or turn off when not in use are all part of the Fire Safety Instruction signs.

Fire Equipment: These are used to make clear where a fire point is, this is where extinguishers and the ability to raise the alarm will be. From a distance you should be albel to see a clear big red sign that lets you know that area is a Fire Point.

Specialist Signs: In addition to the above there is also a number of situations and types of sites which require specialist signage, these can be refuge areas or hospital compliant signs.
