How often do I need my extinguishers checking?

All extinguishers need to be serviced & inspected once a year.

Do we legally have to have Extinguishers?

The simple answer to a complex question is YES, they are a legal requirement, however there’s a lot of confusion on this one, as it can be hard to understand the differences between Laws, Legislation and Regulations and how these work in relation to each other. But to give you an insight into our experience, in all years of trading we have never found a property yet which didn’t require at least one extinguisher.

Below we give you the most common Fire Extinguisher setups for everyday business environments from Pubs, Restaurants, Shops, Offices, Vehicle Mechanic Garages, Light Industrial & HMO’s and Residential properties etc.

Shops & Offices

Whether you have small retail shop, nail salon, hairdressers. Estate agents, or offices the basic extinguisher coverage is very similar, as a rule of thumb if you’re under 200 square meters you will need a minimum of 2 extinguishers per floor.

This would most likely be 1x 2kg Co2 & 1x 6L Foam.

This is just an example of a common situation we recommend you speak to an expert for completely FREE advice by clicking here.

Vehicle Mechanics & Fabricators

MOT stations, car mechanics or even welders and fabricators would almost certainly be best of with powder extinguishers, if you have a premises under 200m2 we recommend at least 2x 6kg Powders. If you have an office or waiting room you may need a Co2 or Foam extinguisher too, get in touch here if you want to check what you need with one of our staff.

Light Industrial

As a rule of thumb light industrial albeit warehousing, storage, or minor manufacturing would require something like 2x 6L Foam and 1x 2kg Co2 per floor, per 200m2.

However, we strongly recommend you get us to pop out for a FREE site survey as the nature of such businesses can have different fire risks.

Cafes, Pubs and Restaurants

These businesses really do require a proper site survey, you can book your FREE engineers visit here. The nature of these business means there’s many different risks, the kitchens will need specific types of Fire Blankets, and Wet Chemical Extinguishers, the public areas and bar areas may need Co2 Extinguishers and the Cellar or storage areas may need both Foam and Co2 extinguishers.
