1. Manage electrical loads safely — and use smart plugs & timers

This is the time of year when every office suddenly finds extra fairy lights, desk decorations and the odd festive gadget plugged in. Our engineers have already spotted a few “creative” plug setups during recent visits — including three extension leads joined together to power one Christmas tree!

To keep things safe, avoid overloading sockets and never daisy-chain extensions.
Using smart plugs with timers and remote monitoring is a brilliant way to stay safe and energy-efficient. They allow you to automatically switch off Christmas lights when the building is empty — no more worrying whether someone left the tree glowing all weekend.

2. Keep escape routes and fire doors clear (Santa still needs a way out! or a way in if you've been good?)

We know everyone gets into the Christmas spirit, but it’s amazing how often our engineers find tinsel, gift boxes or even whole trees tucked into escape routes “just for now.”

Fire exits, corridors and fire doors must stay completely clear at all times.
Friendly reminder: fire doors should never be wedged open with festive boxes — even if they match the colour scheme! Keeping these routes clear ensures everyone can get out safely in an emergency.

3. Use heaters and Christmas lighting safely

As the weather gets colder, we’ve noticed more portable heaters popping up under desks — sometimes a little too close to wrapping paper or decorations. And while older Christmas lights might feel nostalgic, some have seen far better days!

Keep heaters well away from anything flammable, choose energy-efficient LED lights, and inspect cables for damage before switching them on. And of course, smart plugs or timers can handle the “off switch” for you at the end of the day. It’s safer and more convenient.
