Five Fire Extinguisher Myths
Myth: "I don't need fire extinguishers because it's not a legal requirement."
Fact: Fire extinguishers are an essential part of fire safety and are often required in all commercial premises under fire safety regulations, there’s a lot of confusion on the difference in terminology between legislation, regulation and law.
Myth: "I only need fire extinguishers if my staff are trained to use them."
Fact: All employees should receive a fire safety induction, including training on how to use fire extinguishers. Not being trained is not a reason not to have them.
Myth: "I can buy a new extinguisher online and it doesn't need to be certified."
Fact: All extinguishers need to be commissioned and certified on site by a qualified engineer to comply with UK regulations.
Myth: "Powder or all-in-one extinguishers are all I need."
Fact: Powders are not recommended for indoor use unless for specific conditions and all-in-one extinguishers often do not meet British standards and specific legal requirements for individual premises. Be careful of expensive all in one extinguishers and promises of a one size fits all sales pitch, if it seems too good to be true its because it is.
Myth: "If I buy a maintenance-free extinguisher, I don't need an annual check."
Fact: Maintenance-free extinguishers still require regular inspections. The annual inspection is more than just looking at each individual extinguisher, it’s also the opportunity to for qualified and competent person check everything is ok.
